William Rowland: Oil Paintings on Canvas. Pair of Coaching scenes.
Price: £750 (The Pair)
A good quality decorative PAIR of OIL PAINTINGS on canvas of coaching scenes, typical of this artist. Both depict a “Coach and Four” (a passenger coach drawn by four horses with a single driver), one in Winter outside an inn with thick snow on the ground, the other at ‘full tilt’ along a country lane in Summer. Both are signed and measure 15.5 x 10.5ins including the frames, which are in excellent condition. (39.5 x 26.5cms).
* Travelling by coach in the 18th and 19th centuries was an uncomfortable experience. The roads were unmade; the coaches had no suspension and the passengers on top were exposed to all weathers. Despite Coaching Inns being established at seven to ten-mile stages (hence “stage” coaches) relatively few people travelled more than 20 miles from home.
