French Bronze Library InkStand or “Encrier”
A charming early 19th century “Regency” period bronze Inkstand or “Encrier”, cast in the form of a cherub sleeping on a ‘lit bateau’ (boat-shaped bed), supported on typical Regency style shaped anthemion feet. The top lifts off to reveal the removable ink well and ‘pounce’ pot* and holes to support quills. Fine condition and patina. 6ins wide.
* A pounce pot contained a fine powder (often ground cuttlefish bone) which was used to sprinkle on paper to maker it smoother to write on, and also to dry ink.
