LARGE JAPANESE BRONZE LION
Price:£1250
An unusually large and fine quality Japanese Meiji period BRONZE LION. With great attention to its life-like detail, this is beautifully modelled and finely finished, typical of Japanese bronzes of the period. It features inlaid glass eyes and is signed underneath with a seal within the bronze. Very much in the style of Seiya, and possibly the artist is Obsyashi. 20ins long from nose to tail!
circa 1865-80
**The Meiji period extended from 1868 until 1912 and represents the period when Japan moved from an isolated feudal society to a modern industrial state. The highly skilled ‘Samurai’ sword makers turned to making beautiful bronze ornaments when the Samurai sword was banned apart from ceremonial use.
